The Bedford American Legion post 0221 was officially Chartered by the American Legion National Secretary August 1, 1920 followed by the Massachusetts Department Secretary on August 10, 1920. The original forty-two members will always be known as the Charter Members. Three of the charter members were Stanley Thomas Anthony-USN, Hughs I. Hunt-USA, and William Walter Hamilton-USMC. All three were residents of Bedford, served honorably in WW I and lost their lives while in uniform, prior to the time of charter. The Anthony-Hunt-Hamilton post respectfully and honorably continues to carry the name of three of Bedford's finest young warriors. Thus, beginning our American Legion Post in Bedford.
Today The Bedford American Legion Post 221 boasts Legionnaire members, Sons-of-the-Legion members and Women’s Auxiliary members. The eight elected members of the Executive Board consist of experienced military personnel and leaders of the community. The American Legion building is fully functional in hosting local groups to include Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and is the Headquarters for the Medical Chapter of the Yankee Division Veteran’s Association. A completely remodeled Function hall continues to be booked by residents and groups for a variety of events and functions as birthdays, reunions, dances, and weddings.
The Anthony-Hunt-Hamilton American Legion Post 0221 is always looking for a Veteran to become a member of this post. Make it a point to stop in and see what you think.
